Edible Day Lilies...creating a mini garden
Day lilies are a most amazing plant - beautiful AND edible! Liz from Kinspirit Iris and Day Lily Farm introduced us to them some years ago and we love them! So they will be one of the many plants we have on display when the ethnobotanical garden opens next year. Some pictures below show Liz and her husband John in the planning and the planting of the day lily bed, just one of many special areas of the garden.
If you're looking to plant a flower with lush foliage - and lots of good parts to eat to give you a bit of food self sufficiency, definitely take a look at Day Lilies. You can eat the root like a nut, the stem like asparagus, the unopened flower bud as a delicious crunchy snack, and the flower in a salad - yum! And they're full of vitamins too...that's why the goats always go for them first!
