New Fees & Laws for the Selling of Eggs in NSW

Today's mail bought more regulation and fees with it...this time to do with producing and selling eggs in NSW.

Luckily, we come under the limit so don't need to apply for a license (though we and any other people selling less than 20 dozen eggs a week DO NEED to notify the Food Authority of their business details within two months, online notification is free, paper notification is $55 and you can obtain the form by calling 1300 650 124 ), but from now on, anyone selling 20 dozen or more eggs a week has to pay for a license from

Study Links Bee Decline to Mobile Phones

As a beekeeper - eventhough one who is doing it pretty easy in comparison in a country so far untouched (cross fingers and touch timber) by varroa mite and colony collapse disorder (ccd) - it's always so interesting to read the latest research about what's happening in the land of the honeybees.

The latest story out is about research done in India that showed that mobile phones can have a serious impact on a hive, as it limits the colony's ability to find their way home.  As one of the signs of ccd is that the beekeeper is left with an empty colony with just a few dead or dying bees, this m

Pink Tree Guards

I can't even remember how we first met Matt Kilby from Global Land Repair, but suddenly he was vaulting our fences and gates teaching us the best way to plant our orchard and windbreak trees.

A poem about bees

At the Taree Envirofair yesterday where we had a stall selling our goat's milk soaps and lip balms, and selling Sun Baked cookies from our Sun Ovens, I had one of those magic moments.

Our kids always find something to amuse themselves with at the markets, whether it be a fellow stallholder's puppy, other kids to play football with, or as was the case yesterday...a drumming workshop and face painting too!  But our 9 year old daughter also sometimes uses part of our stall to sell her poetry.

Hunting Mushrooms Aussie Style...with a little help from the French

Having grown up in Sydney being told we'd all be dead if we ate a poisonous mushroom, we've kind of avoided all the mushrooms sprouting about the farm during Autumn/Winter, so thank goodness for the local French chef and mushroom connoisseur who has pointed out the folly of our ways!
